Best Beaches in St. Kitts: A Local's Guide
The best beaches in St. Kitts for swimming are on the calm Caribbean side, all within 30 minutes of Basseterre: South Frigate Bay, South Friars Bay and Cockleshell Bay. Here is how every main beach compares, which Atlantic beaches are better for the view than a swim, and what a round trip from the cruise port costs.
Quick answer: For a first beach day, pick South Frigate Bay (10 minutes from the cruise port, beach bars, calm water), South Friars Bay (15 minutes, quieter, good snorkeling) or Cockleshell Bay (25 to 30 minutes, Reggae Beach Bar and views of Nevis). Swim on the Caribbean side. No beach is a short walk from the pier.
St. Kitts beaches compared
The calm beaches face the Caribbean or The Narrows, the channel to Nevis; the Atlantic side is rougher. Drive times are approximate, from the Port Zante cruise pier. Prices are our cash round trips per person from Basseterre.

From the Marriott, our round trips are $10, $20 and $35. See our taxi and beach round-trip page.
Can you walk to a beach from the cruise port?
Not really. There is no visitor beach in downtown Basseterre, and the calm water at South Frigate Bay is about 6 km (nearly 4 miles) from the pier by road: well over an hour on foot along a busy road with little shade.
The nearest sand, at Conaree and Half Moon Bay, is 3 to 5 km away on the rougher Atlantic side. By taxi, Frigate Bay is about 10 minutes and South Friars 15. Save Cockleshell for days with four hours or more ashore.
Our Port Zante cruise port guide covers what is within walking distance, and our cruise passenger page shows how we plan around your all-aboard time.
Frigate Bay beach: south and north
Frigate Bay is two beaches on either side of a narrow neck of land, about 10 minutes from Basseterre. South Frigate Bay faces the Caribbean and is usually calm. North Frigate Bay faces the Atlantic and gets more surf.
South Frigate is home to The Strip, a row of beach bars on the sand, including Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack, Vibes and The Dock. North Frigate is longer and quieter, with the Marriott behind it. You can walk between the two, so swim south and stroll north.
Timothy's Hill, above the bay, shows both seas at once and is a stop on our Panoramic Tour. Our Frigate Bay round trip is $20 per person from Basseterre or $10 from the Marriott.
South Friars Beach
South Friars Bay is the next bay along, about 15 minutes from the port and usually quieter than Frigate Bay. It is on the calm Caribbean side, with beach bars that rent chairs and a reef close to shore for snorkeling.
Don't mix it up with North Friars Bay on the Atlantic side, where the sea is rough. On the drive in we often see green vervet monkeys by the road; our guide to the St. Kitts monkeys explains where else to spot them.
Our round trip is $28 per person from Basseterre, or $20 from the Marriott.
Cockleshell Bay and Reggae Beach Bar
Cockleshell Bay is near the end of the Southeast Peninsula, 25 to 30 minutes from the port, looking across The Narrows to Nevis. The water is usually calm.
Reggae Beach Bar & Grill sits on the bay and rents chairs and umbrellas. Water taxis to Nevis leave from this end of the peninsula (Reggae Beach or nearby Christophe Harbour; confirm the pier when you book), so you can see both islands in one day; our St. Kitts to Nevis guide explains the water taxi and the ferry.
Vervet monkeys know the beach bars well, so keep an eye on your drink. Our round trip is $40 per person from Basseterre, or $35 from the Marriott.
Banana Bay, Majors Bay and Turtle Beach
These quieter beaches are a few minutes from Cockleshell. Banana Bay is home to the Park Hyatt resort. Majors Bay has few facilities, and the Sea Bridge car ferry to Nevis leaves from there. Turtle Beach is small, with a reef offshore.
All beaches in St. Kitts and Nevis are public, but resort chairs and facilities are for guests or paying visitors.
Black sand beaches in St. Kitts
Yes, St. Kitts has black and grey sand beaches, mostly on the north and Atlantic coasts, where the sand comes from the island's volcanic rock.
- Dieppe Bay: a palm-lined black sand beach on the north coast, protected by a reef that is good for snorkeling. It is 35 to 40 minutes away, so ask about adding it to a Full Island Tour.
- Pump Bay: shiny black sand near Sandy Point, just past Brimstone Hill Fortress, and an easy place for beginners to snorkel.
- Conaree: a narrow strip of grey-black sand facing the Atlantic, close to Basseterre. It suits bodysurfing more than a calm swim.
St. Kitts snorkeling spots
The best snorkeling from the shore is on the calm Caribbean side and behind reefs:
- White House Bay: a rocky reef with a sunken tugboat that draws schools of fish, plus the wreck of an 18th-century British troop ship. Bring water shoes; there is little sand.
- South Friars Bay: a reef near shore, with chairs and food when you get out.
- Dieppe Bay and Pump Bay: reef snorkeling off the black sand beaches.
We don't supply snorkel gear, so bring your own mask and fins. Snorkel with a buddy, and watch for boats at White House Bay, a popular yacht anchorage.
Atlantic vs Caribbean: is it safe to swim?
Swim on the Caribbean side. The Atlantic beaches, such as North Frigate Bay, North Friars Bay, Half Moon Bay and Conaree, face the trade winds and can have strong waves and currents.
Don't count on a lifeguard being on duty. Swim where other people are swimming, keep children within reach, and stay out of the water when the waves look big or after a few drinks.
On rocky spots, watch for sea urchins. For wider advice, read our guide to whether St. Kitts is safe.
