Brimstone Hill Fortress, St. Kitts
The island's best-known sight: a hilltop fortress above the Caribbean coast, about 25 minutes' drive from Basseterre and the cruise port.
What you'll see
- The fortress: stone walls, cannon, and the Citadel at the top of the hill.
- The view: the Caribbean coast below and, on a clear day, the island of Sint Eustatius.
- The history: work began in 1690 and went on for just over 100 years. British military engineers designed it; enslaved Africans built and maintained it.
Visiting from the cruise port
Brimstone Hill is on the island's west coast, about 25 minutes from Port Zante by car. With the drive both ways and an hour on site, plan on about 2 to 2.5 hours, or see it as part of a longer island tour.
Bring US dollars for the entrance fee, plus water and comfortable shoes: some paths up to the top are steep.
