St. Kitts Scenic Railway: what the train tour is like, and how it compares with a private tour
The St. Kitts Scenic Railway is a 3-hour loop around the island: about 2 hours on the old sugar cane train along the north-east coast, then about 45 minutes back by bus. It suits travelers who want a relaxed seated ride with drinks; a private tour suits those who want to get out and see places like Brimstone Hill.
Quick answer: The St. Kitts Scenic Railway is a 3-hour, 30-mile loop: 18 miles on a narrow-gauge train built for sugar cane, then 12 miles by bus. You ride double-decker cars with free drinks, narration and a small choir. Cruise guests book it through their cruise line. It does not stop at Brimstone Hill, Romney Manor or a beach.
What is the St. Kitts Scenic Railway?
It is a sightseeing train that runs on the island's old sugar cane railway. The tour circles St. Kitts in one loop: part by train, part by bus.
The railway calls itself "the last railway in the West Indies". Many cruise lines sell its tours as a shore excursion, and hotel guests can book it too.
A short history of the St. Kitts train
The line was built between 1912 and 1926 to carry sugar cane from the estates to the central sugar factory in Basseterre. It ran each year from February to June, during the cane harvest.
It is a narrow-gauge line: the rails are 2 feet 6 inches (762 mm) apart, and the stretch used by the tour is about 18 miles long. Tourist trains began on January 28, 2003.
Sugar production on St. Kitts ended in 2005, when the last cane train arrived and the factory closed after the harvest. Today the train passes the old windmills and chimneys the industry left behind.
What the train tour is like today
The tour takes about 3 hours: about 2 hours by rail and 45 minutes by bus, 30 miles in all. Some days it runs the other way round, bus first.
The train cars
The cars are double-decker. The upper deck is an open-air viewing platform; the lower deck is an air-conditioned lounge with large windows, a bar and a restroom.
Drinks, narration and singers
Rum punch, frozen daiquiris, soft drinks, fruit juice and water are served throughout and included. A tour director tells the island's history, and the three-voice St. Kitts Railway Choir sings Caribbean folk songs and hymns.
What you see
The train follows the north-east (Atlantic) coast, crossing tall steel bridges over deep ravines called ghuts, with Mount Liamuiga, the island's volcano, inland.
The bus then brings you back along the Caribbean side, past Brimstone Hill and Old Road Town. The standard tour has no stops to get off and walk around.
Schedule, tickets and price
The railway runs on a variable schedule. From November to April it usually has several departures a day through the week; from May to October the schedule is more limited.
The railway's own website does not publish a ticket price. Cruise passengers pay the price set by their cruise line, so check your line's shore excursion page for the current fare.
If you are staying on the island, the railway says you can buy tickets at your hotel's tour desk or ask the railway directly. Cruise passengers are asked to book through their cruise line, because seats on the train are reserved.
Booking the Scenic Railway from the cruise port
Cruise guests buy the Scenic Railway through the ship: at the shore excursion desk on board, or online before you sail if your line offers it. The railway lists partner lines including Carnival, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, MSC, Holland America and P&O.
On the day, a short bus ride takes you from the pier to the train. When you book this way, the excursion is your cruise line's own trip and is timed to your ship's day.
Most ships are in port from about 8am to 5pm or 6pm, so a 3-hour train tour leaves part of the day free. See which ships are in on your date on our St. Kitts cruise ship schedule.
Is the St. Kitts train worth it? What reviews say
For many visitors, yes. If you want a relaxed, seated morning with sea views, drinks and some music, it is a good choice.
St. Kitts Scenic Railway reviews on cruise line and booking sites are mostly positive. People tend to praise the views, the drinks and the singing; the usual complaints are the price, the slow and sometimes bumpy ride, and that the last part of the loop is a bus.
It is a weaker fit if you want to walk around a site, swim, or set your own pace.
What the train tour does not include
The standard tour is a ride, not a series of visits. These sights are not part of it:
- Brimstone Hill Fortress: you pass it on the bus, but there is no time to go inside. See our Brimstone Hill Fortress guide for hours and fees.
- Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik: the gardens, the old saman tree and the batik studio need a stop. Read our Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik guide.
- Timothy Hill: the lookout over both seas is south-east of Basseterre, away from the train route.
- Beaches: there is no swim stop. Our guide to the best beaches in St. Kitts covers the options near the port.
Scenic Railway vs a private tour
The main difference: the train is a fixed, shared ride with drinks included, while a private tour is your group only, with stops where you get out. Here is how the train compares with our two most popular private St. Kitts tours.

When to choose which
Choose the Scenic Railway if
You want to sit back with a drink, you like trains, or walking is hard for you. It also suits travelers who prefer to book everything through the ship.
Choose the Panoramic Tour if
You want a short half day with real stops. The Panoramic Tour takes about 2 to 2.5 hours and leaves time for a beach or shopping after.
Choose the Full Island Tour if
You want to go inside Brimstone Hill and see both coasts. The Full Island Tour covers 8 stops in about 4 to 5 hours, so it fills most of a port day.
Can you do the train and a beach or tour?
Yes, on a full port day. The train takes about 3 hours, so many guests ride it in the morning and spend the afternoon on a beach.
Our beach round trips are priced per person, cash: Frigate Bay is 20 USD from Basseterre and about 10 minutes away, and South Friars Beach is 28 USD, about 15 minutes away, with green monkeys often seen on the way. See all fares on our taxi page.
The train plus our Panoramic Tour can also fit on a long port day, since none of the Panoramic stops are on the train tour. Send us the train time and your all-aboard time and we will tell you honestly if it fits. More ideas are on our cruise passengers page.
